Picoreview: Winter Soldier

Picoreview: Captain America: Winter Soldier: I’m not going to go into any detail because this doesn’t open in America until next week, but I was pretty happy with it. There were plenty of outright funny/clever moments, more violence than I expected (I know, it’s about a soldier, but it’s the whole PG-13 drift toward greater violence. I guess I still don’t expect it.), there was at least one good heartbreak moment, and I want my Falcon movie like five minutes ago.

What I will say is dear god, Chris Evans’s shoulder to hip ratio. Holy mother of mercy. Holy sweet mother of mercy. There’s a scene in the film that I could just freeze-frame and stare at for hours. Holy gods. *fans self* (Honestly, it was possibly as good as the Shirtless Thor2 Scene, and elicited the same kind of incredulous silence from the audience.)

Also, in terms of sheer physical perfection, the scenes with Cappy and Robert Redford together–Redford’s still a beautiful dude, but he’s really cragged up, and his roughness compared to Cappy’s inhumanly smoothly perfect features bordered on surreal. Part of my brain kept wishing it was Redford 30 years ago just for the unbelieveable amount of pretty that would’ve been on the screen. :)

If you watch AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D, I’m given to understand that next week’s episode (on the 2nd?) is lead-up to Winter Solider and that the week after (on the 9th?) is CHOCK FULL OF SPOILERS, and I’d say the events of Winter Soldier are unexpected enough (at least to me) that you don’t want to be spoiled via AoS. :)

(I tell you what, though, if I was the cast of AoS I’d have been like EXPLODING WITH THE KNOWING OF WHAT’S COMING, omg. Lucky them!)

Yeah, I've seen Redford recently and...he has not aged well. *sigh*

As for Evans: makes it sad that he said in a recent interview (Variety, I think?) that after he's finished with his Marvel contract, he's planning on retiring from acting and focusing on directing.

I bet after spending 3+ years eating nothing but chicken breasts and doing 4204932870 workouts a day to keep that body I'd want to direct, too. Give him a few years of eating cheeseburgers again and he might come around. :)

From his recent article, it takes relatively little effort on his part to maintain his physique. He's one of those annoyingly blessed people. ScarJo has some funny teasingly "bitter" comments about it. :)

Oops. That previous was supposed to be a reply to Kit's comment.

Unrelated, my tween housemate and I saw Thor together and I observed to her after the window scene that if Mr. Hemsworth wanted to make being shirtless his new thing, I would be totally supportive of that. A's response was, "Oh, yes! That should definitely be his new thing!"

Did the shaky cam bother you?
I'm still trying to figure out if it's a generational or cultural thing. I miss the old 80's-90's steady cam fight scenes.

Thankfully in the Winter Soldier -- it wasn't nausea inducing (like the 2nd Bourne film, or most of the recent action film releases) -- but I have a hard time tracking what was being done to whom (particularly on the 2nd phase of the boat clearing) until someone went flying.

Is it just me?

Re: Did the shaky cam bother you?
Well, it may be a generational or cultural thing, but YES, I'm SO SICK of shaky cam! Our brains do not process visual information that way even when we're being rattled around, we keep it on a plane, ARGH I HATE SHAKY CAM. Seriously, man, they invented the goddamn steady cam rollers FOR A REASON! aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!!!

I mean.

*in a patient and gentle voice* No, it's not just you.
