birthday books

Upon the occasion of his 11th birthday, we gave our older nephew THE SWORD OF SHANNARA, A PRINCESS OF MARS and the Complete Novels of Sherlock Holmes.

He opened the Shannara book and looked at it with great dubiousness, proclaiming, “I’ve never heard of Terry Brooks.”

“This time last year, you hadn’t heard of David Eddings, whom you now love,” I said.

“Oh yeah,” he said thoughtfully. “How did I find out about David Eddings?”

“Aunt Catie gave you the books,” my sister Deirdre said dryly, and he c said, “Oooooh….heh heh heh.”

As of last night he was halfway through the first book and asking my Dad to read it so they could discuss it. :)

As a life-long Terry Brooks fan - who started a little earlier than your nephew - I have two things to say:

b) He's got something like 40 books out there, and more coming - welcome to the joy of having something to read FOREVER. :D

A friend and I spent one winter reading the Belgariad out loud to each other.

Yay for introducing amazing authors to kids that love them! *laughs*

Maybe he's old enough to also like the works of Fritz Leiber?

I mean, you can't go wrong with a book that contains Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. ;-)

Those books were what started my interest in Fantasy.

As a counterpoint, let me quote my own son when I gave him Sword of Shannara (or maybe it was a similar book) years ago:

"Dad, if there's a guy with a sword, and he has to travel far away to do something that will save everyone... Yeah. I'm not really into that."

My response: "Alien creature, get out of my home!"

That seems like a perfectly reasonable response. :)

You're giving him the gift of being able to read those books for the first time. ^_^

Yeah. That's it exactly. :) <3 (And frankly, myself the gift of watching it!)

Have you ever read any Marion Zimmer Bradley?
kitmizkit on December 24th, 2013 07:16 am (UTC)
Not much; she mostly doesn't work for me as a reader. :)
