Kitsnaps: Nom Nom Nom

I love tortoises and turtles. They’re one of the many things I have gained affection for purely through literature. In this particular case, my affection was borne of reading Terry Pratchett’s SMALL GODS on one of the flights around America in 1996 while going to meet my net friends. I had run out of reading material and bought SMALL GODS in desperation, not because I thought it would be good, but because I had read several earlier Pratchett novels, loathed them all universally, and figured that at least I knew what I was getting into with SMALL GODS.

It was a more-than pleasant surprise to discover he’d evolved from the straight parody of the earlier books, and that SMALL GODS was in fact an extremely entertaining story. And I came out of it with a great love for turtles and tortoises. :)

That is one of the best tortoise photos I've ever seen. I kept wanting to just stare at it.

have you read his "Wee Free Men" books? I really think you'd like them

Which earlier books did you read that you didn't like?

I generally advice people to stay the F! away from 'The Colour of Magic' and 'The Light Fantastic' until they've read a few of the later ones.
'Eric' may also be a bit weird as you really need to know Rincewind first(and for that you need to read the two books I just warned about)

In TCoM and TLF, the characters aren't 'properly set and finished', and Discworld still needs a bit of polish.

In fact, 'Guards! Guards!' is the book I would recommend as a starter book. It introduces a lot of important characters (Carrot, Vimes, the rest of the Night watch), gives a good idea of how the city of Ankh-Morpork works, even the Thieves & Assassins guilds, and even gives you a good idea about the magic.

I have no idea. It was more than twenty years ago, dude. The Hollywood one was one of them. I tried about five. But I don't much care for parody in prose (God did not intend me to read Bored of the Rings, even if I was), so the early books were never going to work for me.

That tortoise is definitely side-eying you! It's a Galapagos, I assume?
