moving day

Our landlords stopped by a couple nights ago to say they wouldn’t be renewing our lease, as one of them wants to move back into the house. We were kind of expecting/planning to move anyway, but now we’re definitely moving. The nice thing is if we find a place before our lease is up they’re not going to hold us to it.

It’s at times like this I wish I was a minimalist. :p

It’s at times like this I also think I need to learn to buy my music digitally to begin with, and that I’ve got to get into the habit of using my e-reader instead of print books.

It’s also at times like this that I think I’d better do a Postage Sale and get rid of as many of my own books as I can. There will be more on that in a week or so.

At this point all my CDs have been ripped. I long ago ditches all the jewel cases and put them in binders. But recently I have been wondering why I even keep them at all. All my mp3s are backed up to a second external hard drive. One of my "to do" items is to double check that all the CDs are in fact on the hard drive and then get rid of them.

We rip CDs on purchase. (So, I've just done another half dozen.) As to why we keep the CDs, that's mostly because they're the best proof of purchase we have, and we're not selling them on because that'd be piracy.

A few are signed (including three of last week's purchases), but all are stored in the loft.

(Actually, should we decide there are any we really don't like anymore and we delete the MP3s and FLACs, I suppose we then have the option of reselling the CDs. But we're not particularly factoring that into our decision.)

This sounds like a good idea, but do you keep the liners with the CDs in the binder?

I bought the special CD binders (would have preferred a 3-ring binder system but couldn't find the CD sheets when I was in mid-project mode). I did keep covers/liner notes with the CDs but did have to trim the right hand margins to make them fit. Depending on how the liner notes were laid out, it sometimes meant some struggling to not lose lyrics/text while making it all fit.

Hmm. Okay, thanks. :)

Liners are the one thing I would miss about having the cases. My CD collection isn't that big and I almost never look at the liners, but maybe a way to keep the two together...

You've given me something to think about. :)

Ugh. I am so sorry you have to move /again/.

Everytime I read about a friend having to move, I think I really ought to start trashing a bunch of the stuff I haven't touched in the two years since I moved. Actually, maybe I'll start that in a couple weeks.

moving & stuff
I moved 2 years ago, after having been in the same place for almost 15 years. I gave away a lot before I moved, and more again after going from rental to bought house last year. There is still too much.....
Things are nice, but toting them is not.

All my CDs and DVDs are already crated up.
(Everything is ripped to HDD. The DVDs took a couple of months to finish off)
Most of my books are also crated up, but that's mostly because they were never unpacked when I moved 5 years ago. I just added new stuff to read.
(Reminds me that I have a few of yours that I haven't read, yet. I wonder where I put those... )

Now, my problem would have been my computers...
(I collect vintage home computers, laptops, game consoles and so on... From smaller than PalmPilots to SUN and SGI workstations. )
And the jigsaw puzzles...
(Now, there's a nasty hobby... You know that from the moment you start a 3000piece puzzle and until you finish, you can't use the vacuum)

Good luck with the moving process - from finding a house to culling what needs to be moved.

Here's to better heating and a nice kitchen.

Good luck, both on downsizing and moving. Kind of wish I had a landlord to give the needed kick to get going on at least of one of those... Inertia has me in its grip.
