Acts of Whimsy

Let me point you at this fundraiser for SF author jaylake, whose genome is going to be sequenced in a last-ditch attempt to save his life from the cancer that's killing him.

That's very depressing, sorry. But there are a lot of ridiculous things happening to support the genome sequencing fundraiser. Neil Gaiman is going to sing a song, accompanying himself on a ukelele. Paul Cornell has already done a remarkable rendition of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights". I personally will be doing something appalling:

I'm going to read excerpts from my first novel.

I wrote this thing 20 years ago in a fit of pique after reading a really awful book and saying, "Christ, I can do better than this*." I submitted it and everything, and nobody except one very close friend and the (presumable) intern at DAW Books who rejected it has ever read it. I mean, like, not even my parents have read it. It's been stored in a garage for two decades, and I've never looked at it again, out of, I am not ashamed to tell you, fear and horror.

BUT NOW I AM GOING TO. And I'm going to record myself doing it, along with my commentary to my 19-year-old-self, for the entertainment and amusement of those who support Jay's fundraiser. So drop on by and throw a few dollars in the kitty if you can.

Note: I was set at the stretch goal of $32K. It passed that BEFORE I HAD TIME TO TYPE THIS. So I'm definitely reading NO SONG BUT SILENCE, Book One of the Arthurian Symphony (don't look at me like that. I was nineteen, and Arthurian riffs were very popular at the time. You must forgive me my excesses. I hope. :)), although frankly I expect to find the entire thing appalling. :)

*I genuinely do not remember what book it was that prompted me to write NO SONG BUT SILENCE. I really wish I did, because it must have been just terrible.
