Acts of Whimsy
Let me point you at this fundraiser for SF author jaylake, whose genome is going to be sequenced in a last-ditch attempt to save his life from the cancer that's killing him.

That's very depressing, sorry. But there are a lot of ridiculous things happening to support the genome sequencing fundraiser. Neil Gaiman is going to sing a song, accompanying himself on a ukelele. Paul Cornell has already done a remarkable rendition of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights". I personally will be doing something appalling:

I'm going to read excerpts from my first novel.

I wrote this thing 20 years ago in a fit of pique after reading a really awful book and saying, "Christ, I can do better than this*." I submitted it and everything, and nobody except one very close friend and the (presumable) intern at DAW Books who rejected it has ever read it. I mean, like, not even my parents have read it. It's been stored in a garage for two decades, and I've never looked at it again, out of, I am not ashamed to tell you, fear and horror.

BUT NOW I AM GOING TO. And I'm going to record myself doing it, along with my commentary to my 19-year-old-self, for the entertainment and amusement of those who support Jay's fundraiser. So drop on by and throw a few dollars in the kitty if you can.

Note: I was set at the stretch goal of $32K. It passed that BEFORE I HAD TIME TO TYPE THIS. So I'm definitely reading NO SONG BUT SILENCE, Book One of the Arthurian Symphony (don't look at me like that. I was nineteen, and Arthurian riffs were very popular at the time. You must forgive me my excesses. I hope. :)), although frankly I expect to find the entire thing appalling. :)

*I genuinely do not remember what book it was that prompted me to write NO SONG BUT SILENCE. I really wish I did, because it must have been just terrible.

I wish I were the sort to do public whimsey of the planned variety (having no idea if they're taking volunteers or choosing their participants from those who might actually be Known Of). Somehow just putting money in the kitty doesn't feel like HELPING.

I volunteered, even though I'm not exactly high profile like many of their people.

Hrm. I'm really not one for public planned whimsey, as I said, and I don't actually HAVE any old trunked-for-your-safety manuscripts to perpetuate on defenseless-but-willing victims, but....

*looks into closet*

Also: will you do the commentary to your younger self off the cuff, and will there be sassback? ;-)

Yes, it'll be off the cuff, but whether there will be sassback depends on, er, whether it happens. :)

Here's the cake-taker on the 19 year old self and that title:

I got it from ElfQuest. :)

LOL. I was going to comment on what a great title it was too...until I read where you got it :-)

I look forward to your humilation...er...I mean, reading. You are a brave, brave woman.

And if it makes you feel any better, I wrote my Arthurian take as book 2 (book 1 was the classic "a paranormal loosely based on a character almost exactly like me"). It was a humorous paranormal called KING ME! set in current times. And yes, there was a witch.

It was a good title for the book! I just happened across the phrase in ElfQuest. That it perfects it being the work of a 19 year old is not my fault! :)

Now I'm curious if the one friend is the person who informed me that he or she collects people's awful first novels and got me to send her or him mine. Of course, it occurs to me that I have to identify this person to you in some way to know. Hm.

No, it's not. It was one of my best friends from high school. :)
