is LJ dead?

Is Livejournal dead? Are we all using Tumblr and Twitter (and for me, to an increasingly lesser degree, Facebook) these days? I don’t ask because of this article (touting LJ’s return; hat-tip to Charlie for the link), but because man, it’s *really* seemed quiet the past few months, and only seems to be growing increasingly so. And of course it’s not any skin off my nose to keep cross-posting, but boy, there’s a lot of whistling in the wind going on.

Of course, a Saturday afternoon/evening is probably not the best time to post and ask this, but once upon a time it wouldn’t have been a *bad* time. Or maybe it’s just everybody’s moved on to a new phase in their lives where they don’t have time to blog as much, much like there was a slow visible drop-off in MUSHing among my friends lo these many years ago now as people moved on and out of college and perhaps out of jobs that let them be online 24/7, and started having children and doing other things which quite reasonably had greater demand on their time.

I dunno. I miss the community. I know I’m not doing a great job keeping up my end, either, with sporadic postings, but I miss it anyway.

(x-posted from the essential kit)

I think a lot of people abandoned ship for Dreamwidth and Google +, sadly enough. I don't post much here any more, but then again, I don't post a lot period, not just on LJ. However, I support what LJ is doing for Russian politics, so I'm gonna stick with it.

I've noticed the same thing. It seems like most of the posts on my flist are from fanfic communities or book groups.

I get virtually no interaction from Facebook (and even less from Google+). LiveJournal is my primary social network site.

I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader as to whether that says more about LiveJournal or about me.

Hi. I don't post much in your journal but this made me poke my head up. I like LJ. I prefer the longer, more thought out posts. I'm to slammed/lazy to add to the community lately. Between 3 (one newish-born) kids, a job, a husband and the wind blowing I haven't done much. Which is unfortunate because, for example, my first two kids are thoroughly chronicled on here and the latest one barely has entries. FB has added that timeline thing so I can at find the one liners but it's not the same. Perhaps once I'm back at work and can occasionally get quiet time I'll be better at it.

I still read every post on LJ. I guess I should hold up my end of the bargain and maintain my community, eh?

See, I haven't even updated the profile pick to add the new small. She's technically in there but you can't see her;)

As someone who is primarily a lurker, I notice drops about the same time Livejournal goes through periods of being under attack from hackers. My favorite author's blogs disappear or are not found. Then it seems to take days for people to start reposting.

Still read here but indeed rarely post here anymore. My bad. I can't complain I miss the community without doing something about it myself..

My friendslist is still pretty lively, including personal journalling, but in general it's dropped off, sure.

Functionally for me I think it's barely on life support. I'm not blogging as much as I was, but I want to change that, but I'm not sure if LJ is the place to do it. I'm not sure if G+ is either, but that's a different conversation. However I haven't looked at LJ since Tuesday and I only had to go back 150 or so entries. There was a day when that would be a lunchtime. So yeah, there are still people here, I still read them, but it isn't even a shadow of it's former self.

Yeah. I think that's part of what I miss. I've always kept my friends list pretty pared down because otherwise it was utterly overwhelming, but now it's pared and bare, like.

there are a few of my friends that still post here, but mostly I use LJ as an rss feed-reading thinger. I like having the ability to completely customize the look of my page, and I haven't found another aggregator that has the same flexibility.

DinoMUSH is still going strong!

I've been lazy about blogging all around. One of these days I'll get back to it... But not abandoning LJ any day soon, even if I do regularly grumble about all these newfangled changes :)

I'm still here, and I never posted all that much. :) But you're right that the community is fractured between here, Facebook, Twitter, G+. I do sometimes long for the good old days of 2002 when lj was thriving and active.

I also still MUSH. I'm on Logrus (as Aspen) pretty much whenever I'm awake (you're welcome to hang out in our room! Emily's there too most of the time!) and much to my amazement, we made some policy changes and started up a big plot and GarouMUSH came back from near death, to 20-40 players on a night and sustaining. Who knew the demand was there once we got people excited again?

LJ itself went from being run by smart, geeky people, to soulless incompetents, which doesn't help people feel invested in it.

Garou is still up? Good lord. I played there...geez, fifteen years ago?

My FL is quieter than it used to be, but still gets a fairly regular amount of new content daily. I'm starting to feel more inclined to use LJ again. I like the fast-pace of FB but also find a place in my heart for the longer form ramblings that can happen here. Also my LJ FL is far more "curated" than FB so I'm much more likely to say more meaningful things over here.

I know one of the problems for me is that LJ is not getting notifications of comments out promptly. I don't know why, they can't send out the e-mails--it should be an automatic process!

Without those notifications, the conversations slow down, sometimes a lot, and in conversation, momentum matters!

I'm still here :)
I post less about myself lately though. I'm doing book reviews and some thinks I'm thinking of, but not so much of what I did today or random stuff - that's what Facebook is for. Pics of my kids doing weird stuff: facebook. Stuff that might possibly matter to someone: LJ.
