I'm flailing around at the end of this draft. I'm in the Novelist's Event Horizon. The end of the book is the same distance away as it has always been, as it will always be. I have five chapters left. I will have five chapters left until it's abruptly done, and I won't know quite how I got there. I've written a couple bits which tell me who the bad guy for book two (and possibly beyond) is, but I don't know how to get to them. I hate this part. I want to pull a blanket over my head and ignore everything for a week.

Unfortunately, that won't get the book done, nor will it get two short stories done, nor will it get "Easy Pickings" ready to release into the wild, nor will it get my proofs for BABA YAGA'S DAUGHTER done, all of which *should* be done by the 15th.

The book should be done tomorrow, so I can do some kind of hideous hack of an edit on it before sending it to Lulu (by, yes, the 15th) so it'll get here in time to give my nephew for Christmas.

I'm a bit of a grumpy butt right now. :p Tell me something cheerful?

I have tea! And it is warm! Because my office isn't!

I have books. And a warm apartment :). Oh, and I have gingerbreads. And I survived going home, since everything is covered in an thin layer of ice.

Tell me something cheerful?

I have refilled all my bird feeders and they are a'flutter with all sorts of avians, plus my resident squirrel.

Why does that happen, do you suppose? Is it just because the books hate us?

My mother says writers are just weird. :)

The marquis agrees with her.

I'm rather afraid they're right. :)

I set up the bird feeders, and the black oil sunflower seed feeder was emptied in 3 days by a growing family of chickadees, several birds that I wasn't able to identify, and the resident small woodpecker. (We also have a resident large woodpecker with a brilliant red cap on his head; the little guy just has the ladder-pattern on his wings.) This morning, I watched the woodpecker hang out on the feeder for at least 20 minutes in the bloody cold rain; I called my mom and we had a lovely time speculating about whether or not the bird was waiting for the feeder to magically refill itself. :)
