fairy tales redux

Maybe four sets of four stories? GLASS, BEAST, TOWER, FLIGHT (?)? With a lineup something like:

GLASS: Snow White, Cinderella, The Red Shoes, The Glass Mountain
BEAST: Snow White & Rose Red, Bluebeard, Beauty and the Beast, The Wounded Lion
TOWER: Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Rumpelstiltskin, The Princess of the Tower
FLIGHT: The Children of Lir, The Nightingale, The Wild Swans, The White Dove

There are So Many themes you could choose. SNOW. THRICE. WICKED, as I said, but that gets repetitive and I don’t think I’m clever enough to be re-telling the same fairy tales twice differently enough to be interesting. (Same problem with SNOW, really. :)) TWELFTH. GOLD. Endless choices!

In my copious free time. :) Actually, it’d be kind of nifty to release one set a quarter next year, but that presupposes having my act that much together, or possibly presupposes not having thirty other projects I’m working on. Down, Simba. Anyway, eventually. It’d be fun.

Today I’ve done five loads of laundry (four of which I need to go fold now, sigh), cleaned the kitchen about forty times, swept, vacuumed, and written some on the 8th Walker Papers. And been a Mommy. I should get paid better.

Oddly, I envy your ability to do multiple loads of laundry in a day - I have to hang dry everything, which, given our space means no more than one in any given day. Hooking up the dryer (have to wire a new plug for it and route some ductwork) is on the very, very long list of things to do before the baby gets here....

Move hooking up the dryer toward the top of the list. :)

SW & RR, Bluebeard = Beast? (I'm thinking physical beast re: Bluebeard, and don't know SW&RR well enough off the top of my head). Donkeyskin, perhaps?

Or SKIN for non-"beast" shapechangers?

BIRD instead of FLIGHT? (GLASS, BEAST, TOWER, BIRD has a nice ring to it. Hell, as the title of a 12-16 short story collection that would rock GLASS, BEAST, TOWER, SKIN?).

SO MANY IDEAS!! *cackles madly*

SKIN is /terrific/ for a punchy collection title. Damn!

BIRD feels weaker, though FLIGHT isn't all that great either, hence my ? about it. As part of a 12-16 collection story, GLASS, BEAST, TOWER, BIRD works really well, with the alliteration. I'd thrown 'SWAN' around too, but the swan stories have a certain samey-ness about them, so doing some of the other bird stories seemed more entertaining. *thinks*

Bluebeard's more a metaphorical beast, but SW&RR actually features a bear prince. :) Donkeyskin could be used for a SKIN story, as could 3 of the 4 'bird' ideas listed. Hm. Hm! Okay, maybe SKIN, which is muuuuuch stronger as a title than FLIGHT. Bluebeard, Donkeyskin, Wild Swans, White Dove.

Except then I need a fourth BEAST. Well, those are pretty easy to come by, though. Hm!

*grin* Innit? *nodnodnod*

SKIN is a much better standalone title, but I slightly prefer the alliteration (along with stronger ending sound and less siblance) of GLASS, BEAST, TOWER, BIRD.

SW&RR = aha.

Bluebeard = SKIN? (God, do I just not know this story at all? O.o)

No, Bluebeard doesn't fit for SKIN, really, once I thought about it. But there are lots of shapeshifting stories. :)

pls to be writing faster now, kthx.

(yes, I know it isn't possible. but patience is not really one of my virtues, apparently...)

Not to discourage you, but there is already a YA called GLASS. It's by Ellen Hopkins and came out in 2009. Its the middle of a series, I think. I haven't read it. i just know your logic against WICKED was that there's an adult book by the same name that is pretty popular.

I was trying to put a set together called 'flute' or 'music' with the Pied Piper and I thought there was a Russian tale with a flue and the phoenix, could also do little boy blue as a challenge... but i couldn't come up with a fourth.
kitmizkit on August 18th, 2011 06:28 am (UTC)
Yeah, but GLASS hasn't been made into a musical. It's the pervasiveness of WICKED that makes me want to avoid it. :)

Totally forgot about the musical -- which is funny 'cause I've seen it twice

How 'bout SOUND? Nice, short, single syllable.

This theme is just so cool. The one-word names give it a nice, tight, feel.

Now all I have to do is find time to write them!
