Seriously, people? *Seriously*?

There’s been a futher in the comics world. Two of them, in fact.

Futher #1 is that Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White in the new Superman movie.

Futher #2 is that in the Ultimates world, they’ve killed off Peter Parker and the new Spider-Man is Miles Morales, a black/Latino kid.

Both of these things are apparently unforgiveable to a vocal segment of comics fans because PERRY AND SPIDER-MAN ARE WHITE DUDES.

Seriously, people? I mean, really? *Seriously*?

Okay, possibly I’m not the go-to girl on this, because I thought Taye Diggs would make a perfect Gambit (the kid who played Gambit was fine. But Diggs is unspeakably gorgeous and absurdly charming, which in my book are the two most necessary qualifications for Gambit). But *seriously*? There are people out there who don’t think Laurence Freaking Fishburne would be an *awesome* Perry White? OMG. I have never heard such insanity. He’ll be a riot. He’ll be *perfect*.

And as for Spider-Man, excuse me, but WTF? I mean, okay, it’d be one thing if it was Peter Parker ripping off a Mission: Impossible II-style mask and revealing himself as a black man, but come *on*. It’s a brand-new Spidey. It is, for pity’s sake, the *Ultimate* Spider-Man: Spidey in a world that’s meant to be closer to ours, starting around Y2K, than the Marvel Universe dating back to the 60s. And people are whinging because Spidey’s not a skinny white kid from Queens?

I would say I’m speechless, except I’m obviously not. I just, I mean, Jesus, wow. These people are not living on the same planet I am. Or perhaps more accurately, I sort of wish they weren’t…

I pointed out that this is not even the first time a superhero has had somebody different put on the costume and take the name...

Wonder Woman? Nobody complained because the Amazon who took over for a while was white.

Batman? Both times it's happened with Azrael and with Dick Grayson -- both times a white guy.

Flash? Wally West and aged-to-adulthood Bart Allen? White guys.

Nobody complained like they're complaining about this.

And Miles Morales is not even the first person to put on the Spidey Suit and take the name.

First was Miguel O'Hara -- Spidey 2099 -- and he was biracial too: half Mexican, half Irish.

and then Ben Reilly -- who was a clone.

People are -- for want of a better term -- showing their true colors when they flip out about stuff like this.
