links make a post

I’ve just had a debate with my mom about this article, which I think has great points, and which she thinks is hyperbolic. She would like it to be “How to get better at anything!” instead of “Six keys to being excellent at anything”, which is probably a fair distinction. Either way, I think the points espoused are very good ones. I particularly like #2 and #6 (#1 seems obvious).

The problem with making costumes from ElfQuest is that basically they look like humans dressed up as elves. These two, however, are by far the most elf-like cosplayers I’ve ever seen: Aroree and Winnowill. Well done them.

For some reason the other day I was rem–oh, it was because I was reading THE LAST HOURS OF ANCIENT SUNLIGHT, which I’m trying to write a review of–reminded of The Village, an Irish ecovillage. I would really, really like to live somewhere like that someday. The problem is I’d want all my friends to live there too. It does strike me, though, as the sort of thing that all of us artist and writer types who keep saying “Man I’d like to live in a commune” would potentially do well in. Especially since part of the point of it is somebody else is setting it up. :)

“Year of Miracles” has reached exactly 10,000 words. I am extremely dubious about it coming in at 30K, which is what I was hoping for. I’m afraid it’s going to be some kind of no-man’s-land of 40 or 50K instead. I mean, SFWA calls anything over 40K a novel, but nobody would publish a 40K novel (except Subterranean Press…). Anyway, now I have to go back to writing short stories for the Old Races collection.

I need to do laundry. And a metric shitload of dishes.

I think I’ll go for a walk instead.

thinks to do:
- finish the old races collection
- do MW page proofs
- put together the Indonesian fundraiser idea
- talk to Mom about my idea for the bursary artists award
- submit portfolio to Persons Of Significance
- go to Wexworlds
- change the kitty litter
- clean the fridge
- clean the lanai
- clean the back room
- clean the BATHROOM
- babyproof (ie, clean) the upstairs
- vacuum
other stuff:
- finish the coat
- re-start pilates
- call landlord about the upstairs heat
- NNWM meeting(s)
- Thanksgiving!
- baby cinema & national gallery day

Ooh, gorgeous costumes! And wise choices in just hiding the ears, too :)

It's *possible* to do good elf ears, as is evidenced by, say, Vulcans and LotR. But nobody *does* them. Bleh!

Oh, and, indeed, the Winnowill cosplayer has done a LotR elf with good ears, too! http://www.acparadise.com/acp/display.php?c=2540

Ohyes, that's a good elf too. Makes me half wish I was that young and thin and could to the cosplay thing. Then again, I have this daughter at home who's all into anime cosplay right now... *scheems*!

(#1 seems obvious)

It's obvious to anyone already doing it, but might be a revelation to, for example, someone practicing an instrument only because they've been instructed to. Or to parents contemplating this for their children. :) But it also serves as a guide to someone who's thinking about pursuing a given skill - first decide whether you really, really want to.

Wow, yeah, that Aroree and Winnie are pretty good, both. :)

I found myself counting fingers to make sure those cosplayers weren't really good dolls. o.O Thanks for the links, those two are outstanding!

I kinda did the same thing on Aroree. :)

Me too. :) But it's probably her small mouth. Very Pini elvish.

/reminds self to go see if there's any EQ movie news...
(I know. Same news as the last 20 years, but I can hope it's finally going to happen, right?)

Firstly, having never actually commented before, let me just say that I (as well as my sister and my mother) absolutely love your books. :D

I would highly recommend Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell; it illustrates quite well, in multiple cases, how practice is required to reach the highest levels of achievement. Also, as an aspiring musician, it would be apt to note (as my teacher has told me many times and no doubt will tell me again) that only good practice makes perfect. ;)
