I need to start writing down LJ usernames instead of thinking, “ZOMG! Elizabeth Moon! I must friend her from my writing-friends-journal!” and then failing to make a note of the name so later (like today) when I go to get around to it, I have no idea what username I’m looking for. And Tamora Pierce, too, she’s another one I noticed in the past few days. *mutter*

My damned netbook needs a new power supply–the dongle that fits into the computer got damaged while we were moving–and I went into town to look for one today. They cost a hundred flipping euro at PC World, whereas the internet offers to sell them to me for about fifteen. What the fuck, sez I. The problem with the internet, unfortunately, is that they’re sold from co.uk sites and there’s some stupid law which says you’re not allowed to ship electronics into Ireland. Or something like that. And I’m not sure if my European Paypal account works properly, which makes ebaying it harder. *mutter* There’s a laptop repair shop down the way so I’ll go see if they’ve got them, but *mutter*.

I also looked for new shoes, because my feet continue to hurt enough that I’m avoiding going for walks, but the store I’ve been getting them at didn’t have identical ones to the ones I was wearing, and I had Young Indiana strapped to my chest so there was no chance of trying shoes on. I did get some new insoles which are probably better than the “look, at least you can /wear/ the shoes” insoles I got a couple weeks ago, but really, I haven’t seen any insoles here like the ones we got in the States. Possibly I need to send someone shopping for us. *mutter*

Our dryer, which was supposed to be here last week, doesn’t get delivered until tomorrow. I sure as hell hope it gets delivered, because diapers in particular are a raging you know what in the ass, as a friend of mine once said, without a dryer. And the weather’s been poor, so our clothes have become a Giant Pile of Doom again. *mutter*

And I bought strawberries while I was out because I couldn’t remember if I’d put them on the grocery order. I had. Now I have All The Strawberries. I may be forced to buy some vanilla ice cream and make a strawberry milkshake. *mu…* no, wait, that’s not really mutterable, is it. :)

My hair is driving me *batshit*. I am at a loss as to why I thought it would be a good idea to grow it out. *mutter* (Except I can’t do a Rogue stripe, really, with short hair. And I’ve always vaguely wondered if I could pull off the Veronica Lake hairstyle, and there’s only one way to find out. And it is possible that Veronica Lake hair with a Rogue stripe would look *awesome*. It’s also possible it’d look stupid, of course, but once more, only one way to find out…*mutter*)

Horrifyingly, I have read only 7 books this year. 9, I suppose, if you count reading my own during revisions and copy edits, but still. *mutter*

There. I’ve probably got all of that out of my system now. :) And tersa and esmerel sent me a wifty care package, so the world is not *all* about the mutterings! :)

Yes, a Veronica Lake hairstyle with the rogue stripe would be AWESOME. :-)

I have recently discovered the joy that is the French Twist. It's a wonderful summer style to get the hair out of your face and off your neck, without that annoying ponytail bobbing around and tickling you. :-)
kitmizkit on August 4th, 2010 04:46 pm (UTC)
I've never learned to do an actual French twist, but I used to have one of those hair clip things which held hair back in a twist, yeah. That was good. :)

I use hair combs that interlock. They make it super easy.

1. Pull hair into a ponytail slightly to the left of center.
2. Give the pony a good two turns clockwise, so it's snug against your skull.
3. Shove the first comb onto the left side, anchoring the pony.
4. Tuck the top of the pony over, and roll it counter-clockwise, so that the rest of the hair is now also snug against your skull.
5. Flatten the roll slightly, and use the tips of the second comb to grab the edge of the roll, then shove it beneath the hair, locking the teeth with the teeth of the comb that came in from the left side.
6. Shake head to make sure everything is secure. :-)

If you need shopping to happen, let me know. I am leaving for England in a week and change, but in the interim can certainly make it out to Target or the Maul and then the post office.
kitmizkit on August 4th, 2010 04:48 pm (UTC)
are you coming by here?!? she said hopefully!? :)
Lauraskeagsidhe on August 4th, 2010 04:53 pm (UTC)
Thus far, no luck. :-( I haven't given up hope yet, but odds aren't looking great given the stupidly high flight prices currently in effect for when I'm coming over. My ability to be flexible ceases to exist when that flexibility would cost work more money.

I wonder?
Is all this grousing a result of your becoming a new "mutter"?

remember, there is Strong Possibility of me making an end run to London when I'm in Lille, so anything you need physically brought over from the States... (I has Big Suitcase now!) This would, of course, require you to come to Londonish. Or arrange a meet-up with someone Londonish. Discuss.

Also.. I need to Do Something with my hair. Would a stripe look very very silly on me, d'y'think? (I'm told polka dots are a bitch to maintain). Maybe I'll jsut chop it all off again...
kitmizkit on August 4th, 2010 04:43 pm (UTC)
Oh, there is? I didn't know you might be swinging through London. Hrm, hrm! Forbidden Planet asked if I might be there, so if you're there, that might be Excuse Enough To Go. Hrm!

hah, ask 'em if they want a writerly twofer, and I can even make the trip a tax deduction!

I think you might find that a few of your friends are going to be in England later this month and you might have friends, also in the UK, who will be seeing them and would be able to have such items delivered.

Or, if the law's just about *buying*, order it to be sent to me and I'll post it over to you.

I wasn't aware there is a law against it - just that many shops don't want to post.. However I will see clanwilliam at the end of this month so if all else fails send it, as she suggests to her, and I can get it from her....etc etc..
Myles Corcoranmylescorcoran on August 5th, 2010 09:43 am (UTC)
Yes, I don't think there's a law against shipping electronic goods from the UK to Ireland. There was trouble with Amazon.co.uk and other sites balking at paying the WEEE directive charges, for various reasons, but as I understand it that's all be sorted. It sounds more like the shop in question is just being dickish.

Elizabeth Moon's is e_moon60 in case you didn't find it again. :)

I just this week discovered Elizabeth Moon was on LJ. I was so shocked and thrilled to find she had written a new Paks-verse novel.

When I have too many strawberries I cover them in chocolate....then I get carrier away and cover some marshmallows too. Luckily the local strawberry season in over and I have any chocolate in the house....trying to be good and avoid the sweets.

Let me know the details of the insoles, and I'll be happy to get & send you some. I use the leather/cloth arch support insoles, the kind you trim to size. In the early days of Scholl's gel insoles, I ruined too many pairs of shoes when they leaked to want to try them again.

BTW, if you do run into Katherine Kurtz, she can vouch for my rationality: when the SCA was much younger, we were in the same Kingdom. I bouoght her first novel when it came out, for politeness' sake, and the othrs becase they were god yarns. I think I saw her last in the states on a book tour when Arthur was about as old as Indiana is now.

I was always afraid of having him strapped to my front, as my arms were short enough aready, and to my back for fear of him falling out if I bent forwrd. Then again, there was the tipping over of ME that I worried about--I could crush the poor lad, and not be able to rise on my own!

My mum toss the strawberries ( any fruit actually) into the blender, and creates a lovely strawberry sauce. Then she put it in the freezer, and eat it with ice cream. You can probably use it in milkshakes too :).

I would offer to get you the computer cord, but I am not going to Irland until P-con. Which is a big maybe.... And I suspect you need it before that. I hope it works out though :)

Elizabeth Moon has more than just an LJ (I see one of the other commenters beat me to it) - she blogs here about Paks' World, over here about The Speed of Dark and autism in general, and yet another place about the land management she does on her 80 acre property. I have found them all to be worth following.
