The entire Farscape series is on sale at Amazon for $58. Since it usually costs well over $150, if you don’t have it, I’d suggest making a mad dash for it. In fact, I have a copy already and am tempted to get the US version because it’s apparently got different extras…

(hat tip to Iago for the link!)

- because it's proof that first-season SF television doesn't have to suck

- because 10 years on it's still damned near the best SF on television

- because it almost never fails to go for the jugular. I can genuinely only think of one scene in the entire 4.5 seasons where they missed the chance to use the line that would've broken our hearts just one more time.

- because the characterizations and relationships are fantastic. they're a bunch of criminals stuck on a ship together and it takes time and effort for them to grow into friends. this is not Star Trek with its lack of internal crew character conflict.

- because the non-humanoid aliens, which are almost all Jim Henson puppets, are kick-ass--and two of them are major characters in the story

- because even when they'd been cancelled abruptly and had very little hope of coming back, they chose to end the fourth season with a 'to be continued' instead of cutting it forty seconds earlier on a happy ending--because they, and the fans, all knew it was meant to be a 5 year story, and they had the gall to offer hope and defiance in the face of cancellation.

- because there is lots and lots of black leather :)

Seriously, we just re-watched it this spring, and I honestly went into rewatching it with significant reservations, because I figured it couldn't possibly be as good as I remembered. But it was. The intensity never lets up--in fact, if the show has a flaw, *that's* the flaw: it becomes exhausting because it's so goddamned relentless. And there are some bad episodes, but on the whole I would honestly pit it against any current SF TV in terms of production quality and storytelling. It's just a really good show.
