the hat

since several people have asked:

In other news, bicycles are fast! I zooped over to the store on mine, and it was, well, fast! I donno if it’s just that I haven’t ridden a bike in three and a half years or if the handlebars are actually much further down than they used to be, but it felt a bit thick and wobbly. I did have to raise the seat, so I kind of suspect it’s the placement of the handlebars, so I’ll stop by the shop tomorrow and see if I can’t get him to raise them some. And to loosen the brakes a bit too, because wow grabby. But I have a bike again! And it’s fast! NEEROW ZOOM

Nope - the hat is definitely cute - adorable even.

Take care on the irish roads but good to hear you up on a bike, should make everywhere nearer. Now don't forget to wear sunscreen.

What Miss Kate said.

The last line especially!

Nothing wrong with that hat.
I don't know if it qualifies as "cunnin'," but there's nothing about it to justify the making of fun.

Oh, come *on*. I like that hat. It is cute, it has style, it is not a friggin' baseball cap.

("Hey, you come back here with that bike! That's an antique! There'd better not be a scratch on it when you...")

Your hat is cute, boo on drunkards who tell you otherwise.
connerybeagle on June 23rd, 2009 11:29 pm (UTC)
It is a BAWHSOME hat!

I will BITE that man if he comes here. But I don't think your train does that.
kitmizkit on June 24th, 2009 06:11 am (UTC)
Aww, you are a very kind and fierce Connerybeagle! Probably just as well that you don't BITE anybody, though. They might not want to give more more special LETTERS if you did that!
connerybeagle on June 24th, 2009 04:52 pm (UTC)
Oh. I didn't think of that.

I will GRRR at him!

Having now seen The Hat, I can say:
1) It's cute and should not have summoned the drunken ire, and
2) Despite 1), it covers all of your hair (on this side...) and thus I do not entirely approve.

Brakes are supposed to be grabby because wow mammal suddenly darts in front of you. Besides, if the brake cables are new, they're going to stretch a little. Getting the seat and handlebars correct, however, is quite the good idea.
kitmizkit on June 24th, 2009 06:09 am (UTC)
It's not the hat's fault it covers my hair; my hair is very short right now.

The brakes are grabby in the "if a small mammal darts in front of me and I hit the breaks that hard I'm going to land on the small mammal when I fly over the handlebars" sense of grabby.

Bad hair. Grow out! :)

I still recommend against reducing the effectiveness of your brakes. Why?
- With much less practice than you think, you'll get used to them.
- If you develop the habit of automatically squeezing the rear brake first, a collision is about the only thing that will send you over the handlebars.
- The cables will stretch (especially if they're new) and the pads will wear. Unless you plan to keep adjusting regularly, those brakes will keep losing effectiveness.
- When you really need to stop, you *really* need to stop.
(I actually have credentials to go with this advice. I've ridden literally thousands of miles on bicycles on all types of roads from dirt trails to highways. I've taken quite a few falls. Nothing bad *ever* happened to me because my brakes were too tight. Please trust me here.)
kitmizkit on June 24th, 2009 07:44 pm (UTC)

...you cannot possibly know that you're the third person in a row to offer me Helpful Advice and therefore are somewhat beyond my Last Nerve on Being Advised this evening, so I am attempting to take this in the spirit in which it is offered.

That said, really, I know how to use brakes on a bicycle. Really, I've ridden thousands of miles myself, on all types of roads. Really, I do know that new brakes will loosen up. And really, I already got them adjusted, and I'll swing back by in a month after they've had some more time to loosen on their own, and I'll have them re-tightened so they're snugger and maintain a level I'm comfortable with.

And my hair is growing out as fast as it fucking well can.

Bicycles are fast! Well except in Cork city and Dublin too where they are just scary. Also too many hills in Cork. :(

Smart hat! does it shade the back of your neck at all? Looks like you have been in the amazingly present sun somewhat already. After the last two drenched and drowned excuses for summers isn't this a nice change - although it was wet enough on the West Coast yesterday I gather. eep!
kitmizkit on June 24th, 2009 10:50 am (UTC)
No, there is no neck shade from that hat. I have a different one which does provide neck shade. And yeah, I got a little pink, but I'm partially pink from the exertion biking in that picture. :)

the hat
The hat is adorable. You look very cute in a rather British sort of way, (which is odd considering that you're an Alaskan transplant to Ireland, but cute nonetheless)

I'm _sure_ the drunk guy was extremely tastefully dressed and smelled nice too, as well as being a fashion critic. ;)
