So tired this morning. So HUNGRY this morning. And my shoulder is pinchy, so I’m going to prop myself up on the couch and write instead of going to swim right away. Maybe it’ll relax after a couple hours. (I need to learn to sleep on my left side. That would help.)

Notes from yesterday’s chat room: general agreement that the difficulty isn’t so much exercising as getting out the front door. It’s so much easier with a gym buddy, somebody who expects you to be there. This week’s challenge, then, is to exercise/walk/whatever 3x this week, and report back on Sunday. I’ll put a post up on Sunday so people can report, since there probably won’t be a chat room. Also, question asked: what’s a reasonable weight loss goal? Answer: generally speaking, a pound a week.

I was supposed to do it last night and didn’t, and don’t want to take the time this morning, but people seemed interested, so sometime today I /will/ post explanations on how to do some basic Pilates exercises, and if I can borrow a video camera at some point maybe I’ll make that demonstration video.

I’ve just eaten breakfast 3 hours earlier than I usually do. I fear today is going to be a Hungry Day.

Off to the salt mines now.

Yeah, but I find it more useful to try to aim for the lower end so I'm not disappointed and can be pleasantly surprised if I lose more. ;)

I still think you need someone to stick their fingers in your armpit. It sounds like your subscapularis is Verra Unhappy.

You can come stick fingers in my armpit any time! Assuming "subscapularis" is "under shoulderblade" like it sounds like, yes, that's where it hurts, all right. :)

Bingo. Subscap runs between the shoulder blade and the rib cage, from the medial edge of the scapula to between the rib cage and the upper arm, finally attaching at the front/outside of the arm. The other three rotator cuff muscles are involved in rotating the arm out and back (ie, palm up); subscap is the only one that brings the arm forward and in (like doing the crawl stroke).

Between swimming and computering (and, possibly, sleeping on it) alone, sounds like it's way overworked and terribly ischemic (ie, lack of blood flow). If you've ever fallen on that hand/shoulder, there's some more trauma injury to add to it.

Seriously--it sounds like you've got some long-term overwork injury going on in there; I know you've been dealing with this for years. If it's as ischemic as I think (due to chronic muscle contraction, splinting cycle, etc.), it's not going to get any better on its own and is likely only to get worse by developing further trigger points and whatnot.

Please, please, please make a few phone calls and find an MT or at the very least a PT who will get in there and release it for you. (Doing strengthing exercises for the other rotator cuff muscles will help them, but likely won't do much for the subscap.) I currently have a client who has been dealing with this exact same issue for the last 20 years, including MRIs and tons of doctor's visits, etc. to try and figure out where the pain has come from. I don't want you to have to go through the same sort of thing.

I have no idea what half of that first paragraph means. :) The ouch starts at the inside of my right shoulderblade, near the spine, and radiates through the ulnar nerve in the elbow and into the pinky when it's bad. And yeah, it's clearly repetitive-motion, and I've had it for years, but this recent flare-up is the worst it's been in a long time.

There's a sports therapist thing place here in town. I could go talk to them. If I ever have money. :)

Does it wake you up in the middle of the night at all? Particularly the elbow-pinky sensation? (Could be trigger points referring from the subscap; could also be some brachial [ie, arm] nerve impingement at the neck/shoulder.)

There's a sports therapist thing place here in town. I could go talk to them. If I ever have money. :)

You most definitely should. You should find the money /somewhere/.

I *wish* I could lose a pound a week under my current regimen. I thought I was going to and then I musta eaten too much this weekend. Fie.

But I'm getting out more than 3x a week at least. And you're kinda my gym buddy, because I know you'll comment on my swimming posts. :)
