you know…

…I would open a daily word wars chat room if I wasn’t in a completely different time zone from so many of the writers I know. I mean, really, the Pacific coast writers won’t be up for hours yet, and most of the East Coasters aren’t really stirring yet either (except LAG, who seems to often be on early). Still, if the idea appeals, leave a comment and maybe I’ll start doing that.

(Word wars: a scenario where you set the clock for 30 or 45 minutes and everybody writes as fast as they can for that amount of time, then comes back to report how they did before doing it all over again.)

I noticed that I don’t actually have any of mizkit.com’s sub-pages linked from the main page, so I’m making a half-hearted effort to finally get all the sub-pages into WordPress. So far I’ve done the reading list, which is really about the only one I ever update, anyway. It’s a little odd seeing it in the mizkit.com format instead of the very outdated design it’d been in.

Swam 2500 meters this morning and am feeling pleasantly tired. However, I can’t let myself snooze, so I’m going to drop behind a cut tag and do a liveblog writing day in order to try to keep myself engaged.

ytd km swum: 32.1
miles to Minas Tirith: 154.5

11:16am: I have managed to open the necessary files. It’s an exciting start to the day.

11:22: reading my friends list is not keeping myself engaged. *guilty*

11:38: braincramp. accustomed to picking up a thesaurus when i need a word. several seconds of bewildered delay while I adjust to the idea of using thesaurus.com instead. also, lucy is being very annoying. MEEEOOOOW. MEEEOOOW. MEEEEEH. MAAAAAH.

11:57: 552 words and I’m going to go feed the cats. Back at a quarter after, probably.

12:16: back in the saddle. at 1pm *I* get to eat…

12:17: agh zilli is cuting on me! must…stay…awake!

12:42: hey, 1001 words! yay! oh no, now both cats are cuting on me. aaaagh! so warm! so fuzzy! so purry!

1:03: 1300 words, and I think I’ll go have lunch now.

1:43: this is where it starts getting tough. It’s after lunch, I’ve already written 1300 words which would, by any sensible standards, be enough for a day…but I really should be writing a chapter a day, so that’s more like a 3K goal than a 1K. :p OTOH, I’m getting extras lined up for the Chance graphic novel, so that’s something.

All right. I need an absolute minimum of 2K today. Let’s see where I can get to by 2:30…

2:31: mmm, 1939. Not quite as good as I hoped.

2:58: 2350. A little better. Break time now, my butt is numb.

3:24: ok, getting back to it. Another 750-1Kish will finish the chapter, unless something goes hideously wrong.

3:33: reading icanhazcheezburger: not lyk wurk

3:43: ok, that’s pretty much twenty minutes of surfing the net which would have been better spent writing, obviously. Come on, brain. Not that much more. Tell you what, when you’re done with your words you can write a *poll* to see if a word war chat room would be used by people. Won’t that be *fun*?

3:58: the little red M of gmail seduces me from my writing! But I’ve done 400 words in the last 15 minutes, so that’s a win. I’m reaching the point of just needing a good chapter end and then I can be done for the day. *goes back to it*

4:47: apparently I went directly to ‘quit’ instead of ‘get back to it’. There will be one more update at half five, at which time I’d better be done with this chapter. :p

5:16: 3271 and done.

ytd wordcount: 86,100

hrmmmmm. That might be scary early [for me] in the morning, but not scary in a bad way, especially since I'm back on the novel_in_90 pattern of writing for Mustang...

kitmizkit on April 3rd, 2009 07:15 am (UTC)
Well, I could start it at a more reasonable time than 6am Eastern. :)

Ni90, I should go over there and play along, since this has to be like a Nin60...

Yeah, I'd still be snozing at that time. Then again I wake up at 7am and probably don't write any coherent fiction until at least 10am.

Aw, who am I kidding. There are people that say I never write coherent fiction. *grin*

If you do this next month (i.e. not in the middle of winding down for law finals) I will be all over word wars, even if I am an EST-er.

Do you write on the weekends? I'm fail at timezones outside of the US, but I tend to wake up around 5-6am PST on the weekends. (Stupid internal alarm clock.)

I'm up at 4am on weekdays, but, alas, it's to head off to the day job.

2500m swimming? After several weeks off? YOU KILL ME. :)
kitmizkit on April 3rd, 2009 01:53 pm (UTC)
What will really annoy you is the only reason I stopped at 2500 meters was I'm about to go to the pool again, to work with Ted on proper stroke technique, and I figure I'll get another 500 meters in, minimum. :)
Alix (Tersa): Swimming2 (tersa)tersa on April 3rd, 2009 02:48 pm (UTC)
HAHAHAH.

Yes.

;)
kitmizkit on April 3rd, 2009 04:10 pm (UTC)
Fortunately for me, I'm too far away for you to easily murder. :) (3400 meters total today...)

LOL :)

I'll just have to keep it in mind if I ever manage to get over to Ireland. Just picture it, five years from now, when you least expect it...

*laughs*! I will be VERY SURPRISED! and, um, very DEAD!

word count; how do you do that?
That's something I've been wondering for the longest time.

And it's something that could really get handy for me now.
I'm writing a fic, and some scenes really grow fast and big (and I swear I haven't given them any growth hormones!)

and I can't morcel it and spread it.
it's almost like a written plan sequence.

That's exactly why I usually write a "screenplay" of the scene I'm working on and then novelize it. It avoids me to really go length crazy.
Sure it's taking longer (it made both Mooncat and Kimberly T. breath down on my neck to finish my assigned scenes, back in the days of Gargoyles New Legend *grin*), it's twice the work, but in the end, the scenes are better in terms of narration and rythm. and it shows when a scene or even a story doesn't work.

That's what happened with the short story I wanted to write for this year's Gathering's anthology. The theme is the Hotel Cabal (the one Bluestone brought Goliath to, in "Revelation")
But the story onto into self didn't work out, so I nixed it, and I don't have the time nor ressource to re-imagine one before the dead line, and within the amount of words allowed.

that amount is always my biggest difficulty to overcome
Just like the given time amount for a script.
Self taught stuff is the hardest thing.
