starting with chapter 3

The astute amongst you have noticed that I’ve got quite a number of work-related thinks to do for somebody who’s nominally on vacation. Foremost is writing the proposal (generally a synopsis (done now!) and 3 chapters) for the fifth Walker Papers novel. About a month ago while I was still working on book 4, I had an epiphany about the opening scene of the fifth book, so wrote it down.

Today, trying to write chapter two and finding myself doing a lot of ungainly telling-not-showing, I realized that in fact my epiphany was probably really the end of chapter three, and that I had to back-write everything up to tat point in order to make it not suck. This is the first time I’ve started a “2nd draft” directory before I’ve even gotten 10 pages written. Oi.

Apropos of nothing, when I was getting ready to leave San Diego and the very kind wedschilde/Reece and sanguinepen/Jenn brought me to Mysterious Galaxy to buy books for the plane ride home, I snatched up kristine_smith/Kristine Smith’s ENDGAME, because I’d heard really good things about it. What I had not heard, nor realized through my own cleverness, was that a book titled ‘endgame’ was, y’know, probably not book one in the series. So now it’s on the shelf TAUNTING ME until I get the others. Duh. :)

We have managed to go to the gym 3 days in a row. I was slightly less annoyingly perky yesterday, due to the tiredness, but was back in full form today. “It’s okay,” Ted said, Eeyore-like, “I’ve gotten used to it.” *laughs*

I know there are other things I want to post about, but I can’t hold thoughts in my brain long enough to get them typed.

Oh! Promotional type stuff. I will make another post with that stuff in it. Because I haven’t posted enough today. O.O

I have heard from at least one person who began with ENDGAME, and managed to work through it. Even though they did go back and get all the other books, they felt it stood alone. Other folks start it and give up. That's what I get for writing what was essentially a 5-volume novel.

If/when you do get to the books, I hope you enjoy them.

I had a scarring experience as a youth (I read WISHSONG OF SHANNARA, sobbed copiously, closed the book, and read, on the back cover, "Don't miss the first two books in the trilogy!") and have ever since been quite neurotic about reading books in order. :) It will be worth waiting for, I'm sure. :)

Just started Urban Shaman this morning and holy crap wow why have I not read this before now?

I really, really enjoyed TQB but it took me a bit to get into. Not so this one.

Clearly you were saving it for a rainy day! :)

And yeah, it's a completely different read from TQB. :) I'm glad you're enjoying it! :)
