flick flick flick

I stayed very busy today, and yet managed to not actually do the one thing I really should have, which is the grant. I am intimidated by the grant. There’s no reason to be, particularly since Dad’s done most of the heavy lifting on it. But it intimidates me anyway, and so I did ALL KINDS of other work in order to avoid the grant. I cleaned the kitchen, walked 7 miles, played CoH for 10 minutes, answered/wrote a number of Chance emails, uploaded things, downloaded things, cleaned nearly 400 emails out of my email box, filtered a bunch more email (gmail’s #1 flaw is that it doesn’t actually allow you to create new directories for email) did a quick ruthless edit on a high school friend’s work project, and…ok, it seems like I did more than that, but I guess that was all.

Totally off the topic: I got my hair cut last week. Ian, the hairdresser, asked three times if I was *sure* didn’t want to dye it again. Yes, I said each time, and the last time I said, “I thought I’d see what my real hair color was,” and he said, “Oh, no. No. Come back to us, Cate. You’re too young to let your hair be its natural color. Come back to us!”

Now I’m all the more determined to investigate the real color. :) Actually, except for the red-dyed bangs, it really is the natural color, which I don’t think is nearly as dreadful as yer man Ian thought. There’s some white in there, sure, and there’re a couple of ten or twelve strand gatherings of white at my temples, which could get quite old-school Rogueish if they should continue on, so I’m rather eager to leave them alone for a while! :)

I'm not sure I see your distinction in regards to gmail. Splain. :)
kit: staticmizkit on May 28th, 2008 10:03 pm (UTC)
The only place there is to store email is in the inbox. You can filter it by whatever means you desire within the inbox, sure, but I can't move, say, all my Chance material into its own folder so it's not actually cluttering up the inbox itself.

Or at least if I can, I don't know how.
rfrancis on May 28th, 2008 10:18 pm (UTC)
Well, if you label it with Chance or whatever, then archive it, it's no longer in the inbox, right? It's still in All mail, but, well, hence the name. :)

You can even automate that (where appropriate, like I do it with a mailing list or two) by having the automatic filter both label it and "skip the inbox."

Or am I still not getting it?
kitmizkit on May 28th, 2008 10:25 pm (UTC)
...no, I've just never understood how the archive box works so I've never used it. I gather, because you've made me try it, that there's no actual "archives" to go look in, but instead I pull up the label I'm using and voila, it filters only those files I've so labeled. Which, ok, is basically what I want it to do. I just didn't understand.

Except what happens if you skip the inbox? Do you get any kind of notification that there are new messages piling up in your archives somewhere?
rfrancis on May 28th, 2008 10:31 pm (UTC)
Yeah, you get the same boldface unread number next to labels that you get next to inbox.

Yes, all "archive" does is remove something from the inbox, period. You can legitimately think of "inbox" as just a special label. When you're on the default inbox view, you're seeing everything labeled inbox. When you archive, it removes the inbox label. The message is still there and still has any other label, just not inbox.

Hope that helps.

It's extremely helpful, in fact. Thank you.

I was going to say that's what archiving is for, but Random beat me to it!

It's a randomgang conspiracy!

It is! But now I understand!

I've also been playing a bit of CoH, because unlike the other MMOs I've played, I actually enjoy playing this one. What a concept! :-) The two big new features, IMO, are that they actually filter out those dead contacts into a separate tab now, and that you can trade in 3 inspirations of a kind you don't want for something useful. (As a regen scrapper, that means turning Endurance into something else, usually Health. Yay!)

Naturally grey hair is sexy, too.

Oooooooh. The filter for the contacts is gooooood. Yay!

I personally have great hopes for going all white so I can dye the larger part of my hair brown again and leave the Rogue stripe in place without having to bleach one in. :) It probably won't happen, as my dad's half of the family doesn't seem to do much more grey than I've got, and my mom's half seems to be well-greyed by the time they reach my age, so I'm probably tending towards Dad's half, but I have hope. :)

You're going white. I'm going steadily more silver by the year. We're gettin' old, babe. ;)

Looks like somebody already gave a good explanation of 'archived tags = directories'. I looove that functionality, especially because you can have several tags on messages and then later find them in each 'directory' without having more than one message stored :)
