natter natter natter SQUEE!

Is it just me, or does nothing happen when you go plug numbers into the Zokutou word counter these days?

Last year a World Wildlife Fund event called Earth Hour got Sydney, Australia to turn out many, if not all, of its lights for an hour at 8pm on March 31st, to “to deliver a message about the need for action on global warming.” This year, Earth Hour is going global on March 29, and invites everybody to turn off the lights for an hour at 8pm local time around the world.

I remember this happening last year, and I thought it was cool then and I think it’s cool now. I read some articles the next day where there were interviews with people who’d gone out to watch the city from a distance, and I remember one family who were kind of surprised that it didn’t all go dark at once, but that it faded out, and a little disappointed that it didn’t go entirely dark. Still, the site says, “…more than 2.2 million people participat[ed] in an effort that darkened icons such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge and resulted in a ten per cent drop in energy usage – double what had been predicted.” That’s fairly awesome.

I’m going to be in Dublin being a GoH at P-Con on March 29th. Not sure I can convince the hotel to turn off the lights, but it’d be neat if Dublin was participating at all.

This is also neat: my…ok, I think he’s actually my second cousin or something, since he’s my cousin’s kid, but in the interests of generational tidiness, my nephew, Duke, got to meet Barack Obama yesterday and had his picture taken with him:

I think I may have just fallen one step further down the “not maintaining my own server email/photo gallery/etc, because this is a new computer and it hasn’t got the Gallery Remote software set up on it, and it was just so much easier to upload the photo to the Picasa gallery. Damn. I used to have geek cred, man. Stupid Picasa gallery wouldn’t do what I wanted, I ended up uploading it to my own gallery anyway. Pptltltlbht.

(…actually, downloading Picasa and waiting for it to drag in all the thousands of photos I’ve taken took a lot longer than it would’ve to download GR, but I need Picasa to resize the photo, so I’m kinda screwed. Watching it pull in all these photos, and realizing a lot of them are really pretty *good*, really surprises me. I don’t know why, but pretty much every time I look at my own photographic work I’m surprised at the quality.)

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! ZOMG! I just got two boxes full of HOUSE OF CARDS in the mail! ZOMG! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I am SO HAPPY to have gotten this book! After last year’s absolutely hell revision process on it, and finishing not so very long ago at all in the scheme of things, having it *in my hands* is maybe the most exciting book I’ve held since URBAN SHAMAN came out. Wow, wow, wow, YAY!

Quick! Speak unto me the reason you, yes, *you*, should recieve a shiny new author-signed copy of HOUSE OF CARDS, to be sent out on Monday, and I’ll send a handful out to the best answers! :)

It isn't just you will the counter. They have the submit button redirected to the wrong place. But you can take the code from the counter and modify it by hand. It is a pain, but works.

I wish I had a good reason for getting a copy of your new shiny book, but I don't really. It would save me money is the best I've got. I spend $200 of the money I would be using to buy books this year to take a beautiful stray cat I find in my yard to the vet so I could find him a home with a friend instead of taking him to animal control. It broke my heart to give him up, but my life isn't suited to any pets and he would have been very unhappy at my home.

First cousin-once-removed, actually. Said your mother the genealogist.
The Bellinghmanbellinghman on January 25th, 2008 01:44 pm (UTC)

The algorithm is as follows. Go back to the common ancestor. Now keep going forward generations until you reach the first of the two people you are comparing.

If it's one generation, then it's not cousins at all
If it's two generations, they're first cousins.
If it's three generations, they're second cousins.
And so on.

Now keep going forward generations until you reach the second one. The number of generations you go here is how far the removal is.

So, if someone is your first cousin, then their kid is your first cousin once removed, because you had to go one extra generation.

Your father's first cousin is your first cousin once removed.
Your father's first cousin's son is your second cousin.
Your father's first cousin's grandson is your second cousin once removed.
Your father's first cousin's great grandson is your second cousin twice removed.

Hope this helps the non-genealogists here.

We'll have to see what we can do re Earth Time on the 29th.

As for the book, well I'm your knight in shining armour, bowing to your Imperial Princess (and if not, I will schedule in a whistle recital!)

I really would love a copy.

Be well

No, the Zokutou thing is down, and there's no contact on the website, and an e-mail to 'admin@' produced no result. Haven't tried 'webmaster' yet, but that's all I can think of. The forums on the site haven't been updated since 2005, so it looks pretty much dead, although old wordmeters are still working.

They took down the mater for NaNo, and don't seem to have put it back together properly, and it doesn't look like it's anyone's priority to even check :-((((

I love that word meter. Looks like I'll have to write my own.

One: The gorgeous picture of Regan that is the userpic on this reply.

Two: Because hedgehogs really are the most adorable thing. If you don't believe me, just look at this:

Although, I have to be honest and admit that very young baby hedgies are a bit wrinkly:

Though, being placed on an apple does nothing for our dignity.

Third: You are awesome with sauce and you wub me!

Fourth: I picked a great German restaurant to take you to in Massachusetts!

Fifth: The voices said you should. Until the medication kicked in.

Why should I get a House of Cards. Let's see...we are hopefully going to begin fertility treatments again next month which always makes me super grumpy. It would be nice to have something new and fun to read. I am almost done with my last new book and then I will be rereading old favorites for a while.

Does your nephew live in South Carolina?
kitmizkit on January 25th, 2008 02:08 pm (UTC)
If that's where Obama was yesterday, yes. :)

You nephew looks adorable.

I'd love to get a copy of House of Cards. I've enjoyed all your books so far and really would like to get this one sooner rather than later, even if it will possibly languish on the tbr mountain for a while. I've been using some of the others lurking as bribes to myself to get some of the lurkers read!
kitmizkit on January 25th, 2008 11:01 pm (UTC)
Isn't he a cutie? I think he and his brother look like Norse godlings, which is a little odd, as their genetic heritage is Irish and Italian. :)

*me* pleeeeese for the shiny new author signed book! Okay, so now I should say something funny, or witty, but as my brain cells are smush from doing tax returns (the day job!) I'll have to settle for this instead...

How about I support your and WWF's efforts for Dublin switching off! (and yes, I'm hoping to go to P-Con if I can scrape enough pennies together, so I'll stand with you in solidarity!) I'll also donate double the cover price of the book to WWF too:) (and they'll get more cos of the charity tax thing, which is another bonus!)

So preeeeety please again cos I absolutely LOVED HOS! And I really want to know what happens next to Alban and Grit and Tony and Janx *grin*
xnamkradxnamkrad on January 25th, 2008 03:34 pm (UTC)
Hi there, as the P-Con chair, drop me a line and I'll freeze the cost for you.
irishkateirishkate on January 25th, 2008 02:11 pm (UTC)
why I should get a book? Because I will turn up on your doorstep until I do!

Congratulations and squeee

Because tonight is my last night of radiation treatment, and a shiny new Kitbook would be a great way to celebrate? ;)

Ooh! Shiny book copy! Should I go with blackmail? Neat memories? Promises of riches untold? I could do all of the above!

Blackmail: I have pictures, and I'm not afraid to post them! I have pics from college (we all look goofy, but you look especially goofy in one of them) and from when we were exhausted in London.

Neat memory: I suspect you didn't realize at the time just HOW soaked the back of me got when I was standing on the rim of that fountain performing your wedding ceremony.

Riches untold: I'll buy you a nice dinner out next time I'm in the UK!

Also I'm really very nice and I'm in a glum and gloomy mood and a nice book would be an excellent antidote.
kallianeira on January 25th, 2008 03:09 pm (UTC)
I want one!
How about...

Because I just went down on Wednesday to my local comic book shop and told Tim The Comic Guy that as soon as he sees Take A Chance available for order, I want one and he should order several because it's going to be good?

And because I regularly loan out your books to friends, and they always love them, and buy their own copies, and therefore offering me a copy of House of Cards increases your chances of selling more copies?

And because I'm planning on bleaching streaks into my hair to dye purple in celebration of my birthday tomorrow, and I'm going to learn from your Rogue-stripe lessons, because I'm smart that way?

And because I'm a big fan pretty pretty please?
Mary Annepers1stence on January 25th, 2008 03:10 pm (UTC)
Because I read HofS for you back at the near-beginning? Because we suffered through Dr. Doom together? Because I sometimes take pictures of Kit books in the wild? Because I say "please"? I'll leave the blackmail to LEB, because I'm above that sort of thing (which isn't to say I couldn't do it...). :)
