up and running

New computer is up and running, thanks be to Myles for providing it and Ted for doing the heavy lifting. Don’t have the files moved over from the old hard drive yet, but I’ve got the important things installed: City of Heroes, and SimpleMU*. :)

I have managed a whacking 1011 words today, which is not exactly covering myself in glory, although at least it made the 1K wordcount. Still, I don’t think I’m going to do more, as this was a morning when I found myself cleaning the kitchen and sweeping the hall in order to avoid writing. I think I’ll go…

…that sentence was supposed to finish–oh dear, this computer’s set up to a UK keyboard layout. Going to have to fix that. *searches for the ” key* Right. Where was I. Supposed to finish with “see Enchanted again”, but having just looked at the times it’s playing, I’ve missed it. Oops. They changed the schedule, like it was Friday or something. Doity bastads. Man, I wonder if that means I should go back to work.

Naaah. I’ll go for a walk instead.

In the rain. o.O

ytd wordcount: 22,700

I think it may be catching, by the way. My home machine is now refusing to boot, not seeing the boot disc at all

Augh! Computer virus!

Happily - very happily - it's now happy again. I unplugged and replugged the power cable for that drive, and wiggled its data cable, and all is well.

I could have done without it, though.

Oh good! Whew!

Yay for heavy-lifting Ted. I'm glad it seems to work, even if there's one or two little gotchas lurking like the keyboard layout.

Which, of course, was an Irish (IE) layout, I'll have you know. (Alt-Gr 4 = €)
The Bellinghmanbellinghman on January 18th, 2008 06:36 pm (UTC)
On my UK keyboard, Alt-Gr 4 = €.

Hmm, our politicians haven't told us we'll be in the euro before these keyboards get much older.

What's Gr?
The Bellinghmanbellinghman on January 18th, 2008 06:47 pm (UTC)
The right-hand Alt key - it often has the legend 'Alt Gr'. I think the Gr part of it stands for 'graphic', as in graphic characters.

*tests* Darn, mine doesn't make a euro sign. :)

You've not set it to be a US keyboard, have you?
kitmizkit on January 18th, 2008 06:52 pm (UTC)
Well, yes, because otherwise the goddamned " key is in the wrong place.
The Bellinghmanbellinghman on January 18th, 2008 06:59 pm (UTC)
Well that explains it. Without the web cam carefully positioned so the OS can see what's actually painted on the keys, it has to go with what you've told it.

(The '"' key is above the '2', like God intended. Only heathen pinko Yankees could possibly think '@' belongs there.)

(No, I'm not buying you a new keyboard. You can get that coffee out yourself.)

One godless heathen commie pinko Yank at your service!

Ah, the priorties of things like simplemu. And then did you have to plug in a horde of addresses to sites you only vaguely visit? Or have you limited yourself to a single or handful of sites?
kitmizkit on January 18th, 2008 03:00 pm (UTC)
Two. I stopped MUSHing years ago, and only use it for chat these days, so my whereabouts are much more limited. It's better that way.
