What would you like most to see for STONEMASTER stretch goals? (choose 2, please)

a world map
a brief history of the world/historical figures (worldbuilding stuff, iow)
short stories about secondary characters
cover art/editing/delivery of book 3 (this would be a Very Big Goal)
something else to be illuminated in comments

The only thing I want is a more timely announcement of new KS projects...
(I prefer not to 'follow' most project creators because I usually don't care what they are backing. )

I announced a long time ago I wasn't posting to Livejournal anymore. I'm only using it today because it's the only place I can make a poll like this. Join my newsletter, where you will get all the relevant information delivered right to you, pretty much monthly! :) http://tinyletter.com/ce_murphy

You don't have to do something as grand as posting here...
But maybe doing one last update to one of your earlier Kickstarters to announce the new one?
(I tend to leave newsletters unread for a long, long time. The few I actually read... )
kitmizkit on September 11th, 2018 04:00 pm (UTC)
People clearly don't read Kickstarter updates, either, given how many times I repeat myself in them.... :)

I ask people to join the newsletter when I'm wrapping up a Kickstarter so I don't *have* to go to old Kickstarters to make announcements. That way I know I'm only approaching people who want to *be* approached. Which is, in fact, the law here now...

Newsletters are best
I really dislike old Kickstarters being exhumed to spread word of the new one. Getting a half dozen messages that are all the same is very off-putting.

Your approach of offering newsletter signups is best, in my view. I'm much more likely to open a newsletter, whereas most Kickstarter updates go into my Kickstarter Update Folder with the 3,288 that are already there.

World maps are even better than newsletters. It hardly really seems like a proper fantasy world without a map! But the third book would be even better than a map. Or both.

Plus when you add a third book you can add tiers for Books 2+3 and 1-2-3 to go with the tiers for Book 2 and Book 1+2. But doing Book 3 as its own Kickstarter later is OK too.

Tune the Studio Piano & a Poster
a) Tune the Studio Piano. FOR THE GOOD PEOPLE OF DUBLIN (subsection which frequent the studio) ;)

b) An A2 Poster from the cover art that ppl can buy online and get when pledging.
.. and then you get one of those posters yourself, to put over the piano when you tune it.

Re: Tune the Studio Piano & a Poster
oh, cover art poster is a good idea. i should've thought of that. :)

Argument to use as tiebreaker: my 11yo is on such a world map/worldbuilding-appendix right now. Plus presumably you already have that stuff in some form?
kitmizkit on September 11th, 2018 07:05 pm (UTC)
There's stuff on the naming scheme, but otherwise there's actually surprisingly little worldbuilding stuff written down. :)

What I want
Not necessarily as a reward. I understand that writers make the names of their characters fit their world and often don't have any relation to English. I understand they have more than 3 characters (tongue in cheek) to make the story more interesting and that lots of things happen. But my old brain just can't keep them straight any more.... unless it's a series and even then I have problems. It would be SO helpful if there was an ALPHABETICAL list of characters, with a short description of how they relate, at the end of a book. They don't have to be spoiler notes, just enough to be able to look and see where they fit in the cast. Sometimes I take notes just so I can keep the characters straight. Not your books, but other books, I never get past the first chapter because it's clear I'll never keep them straight.

Re: What I want
As soon as I started thinking about this, I realized why, when authors DO put a cast of characters in, they don't do it alphabetically. It's because the "how they relate" aspect is so much easier to do from a "these people are all part of house Z, these ones are part of house Y" than to say Character X is from House Y, friends with characters A & B, and enemies of Q & D."

Hm. I'll have to think about it some more. Thanks for the idea!

Re: What I want
I find a non-spoilery Dramatis Personae very helpful, especially in big series where I wonder "Who was that, again?" I find them most useful if sorted by character height, but alphabetically or by grouping is OK too.

Thanks for posting here, plus a ?
LJ helpfully told me you'd posted here, which is great. I see that you, like many, have fled Our Russian Overlords for DW. I've been hanging out more in DW recently because I have some other friends who have made that switch. I am there as DawnD, just like here. (In case you want to re-friend me there as well).

I don't have much to say about your book stuff, other than to affirm what someone else mentioned, that a Cast of Characters can be really useful. To deal with the alphabetical vs "house" issue, you could always do a version of both? Eg, list characters by their houses, and then make another alphabetical
List that JUST says "Lord Whoziefutzit: see House Whatchamacallit." Yes, i am a "both/And" kind of a gal. ;)

Now, on to the question: Having looked a bit back in your LJ here, I noticed your International Consortium of Getting Things Done. Are you still doing that? If so, when do you meet? I might like to join. :) If you aren't doing that, still, and you'd like to, I have a group that my friend Griffen (same handle on DW) and I started earlier this year, that's for doing some similar things. Let me know if you'd like to join us. :)

RE: Thanks for posting here, plus a ?
Oh jeeze, in the whole LJ thing, I somehow missed previously who you actually are! LOL. I LOVED your Walker Papers series, and also your stuff about The Old Races.

I am still interested in the International Consortium, if you take new members who aren't like, big name authors n stuff. And you'd still be welcome to join our little tiny group, though I have to say, it's little n tiny, and not JUST for writers, so may not be of interest. Still, once I get over my embarrassment, we'd totally welcome new members. Like you, or anyone. :)

Re: Thanks for posting here, plus a ?
Aww, I'm glad you liked them! &heart;

Apparently the International Consortium didn't get very far, because while I remember mentioning it, it doesn't seem to have kept up. Maybe I *should* join yours... :)
