Ten Years In Ireland

I was just thinking that I’ve been a freelancer ten years today, and then it slowly dawned on me that no, I’ve been a freelancer *eleven* years today; I apparently missed last year’s anniversary totally.

*Today*, we’re ten years in Ireland. I am, in fact, ten years and 24 days in Ireland today, but Ted, who came a month after me, arrived on the 1st. Or possibly the 5th, but anyway, we count from his arrival at the start of December.

Ten years. Wow.

People still ask if we think we’ll ever move back. We honestly just sit there and stare blankly at the idea, for a lot of reasons. It’s expensive to move, of course, and there’s still not real nationalized health care in the States, and it’d be starting all the fuck over again, which is just too much to contemplate, and we really can’t imagine where we’d want to live if we did (most of the short-list options are too expensive), and we’ve been gone long enough that visiting the States is like visiting a foreign country. A very familiar foreign country, granted, but a foreign country. Also, the States are full of crazy people. If we were to move back to North America, we think we’d really rather move to Canada. I don’t know that they have a deep need for fantasy novelists in Canada, though. :)

Anyway! Ten years in Ireland. That’s a long time! Nigh unto a quarter of my life! Tempis fugit!

Home is where the Heart is, and no place is perfect except for where you want to be.

I saw the world, and came back to Oregon. Thats where I belong.

*raises a glass*

Some days I think about expatriating, then I realize that the only place that would take me is Israel, and while I love the country and many of the people, oh HELL no, until they do a clean sweep of the current ruling government and all their cronies...

I'm about to embark on Year One in the UK, and people are asking when I'm coming back before I've even left :P (The answer is "ask us again in two years.")

Maybe I'll get over to Ireland?

Or maybe I'll get over to the UK! Where are you going to be?

I'll be in London!

A mere hop, skip and jump!

Compared to the distances I'm used to traversing, it feels very close. Although I know in reality it's not XD My beau worked in Dublin before coming to Seattle, though, so I feel like I should be allowed to see Dublin, too :P

Man, I'm from Alaska. It's no farther from Dublin to London than it is from Anchorage to Fairbanks. It's close. :)

London to Paris is two hours on the EuroStar, and I'm like, "But it's FOUR HOURS from Seattle to Portland! How is that even fair?"

Happy 'versary! It seems to me that that's where you live now.

I have lived in upstate NY all my life (barring one summer in North Carolina best not spoken of) and in my current section of it since 1980. I keep telling myself that I should go somewhere else, but nowhere has really appealed. Of course, then you bought the manor house...

Rented, I'm afraid, so we won't be here forever. :)

We'll see....

On the other hand, the way things are going in America these days, I suggest staying put. Also, in completely unrelated news, do you have an extra bedroom?

well, Canada really could use a few more fantasy novelists, but I'm pretty sure that living in Ireland trumps prety much anywhere in North America.

Only in a romantic sense. :)
deliiriadeliiria on December 3rd, 2015 03:15 am (UTC)
yeah, I imagine the reality of living anywhere is that there are always drawbacks of one sort or another.

We're very lucky to have you all :)

The apple butter is going very, very well with my morning porridge, by the way!

Oh, hooray! I'm delighted to hear it! <3
